VANISHING

After 65 years operational, Lee's Art Shop on West 57th Street is closing sometime over the following 3 to 4 weeks.

Your building was bought in 2013 by real estate investor Joseph Safdieh of Safka Holdings, after which he proceeded to go to court pet owners, David Steinberg and Jill Isaacs, according to The Genuine Article, "for refusing to further extend the research period on the property despite several outstanding issues in relation to its certificate of occupancy."

That deal fell through--and Thor's Joe Sitt got in the loop. Safka then sued Thor.

Steinberg and Isaacs would be the children of Gilbert Steinberg, who died in 2008. With his wife, Ruth, Steinberg bought the original store in 1951 and moved it for this building in 1975. They purchased your building two decades later.

"The structure would probably be changed into a high-end retail box," industry pros told The Real Thing 36 months ago. The distinctive structure was built in 1897 and is recognized as the Society House in the American Society of Civil Engineers. It once was home to a Schrafft%u2019s restaurant. And it is landmarked.

Lee's is beloved through the city. "It never fails," wrote the Times this year. "You are going into Lee%u2019s Art Shop, half a block from Carnegie Hall, as being a customer %u2014 usually for something prosaic like a number of Pilot Razor Points from other amazing 215-slot pen rack %u2014 and leave wishing you are a designer."

The shop is currently developing a major liquidation sale, with deals up to 75% off.
